In 1957, Miriam graduated from Crispus Attucks High School (C.A.H.S.) and entered Central State College (which later became Central State University), where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education.

She was employed in the capacity of a business teacher, a psychological services administrator, responsible for service to 33 schools and she retired as a psychologist.

She was a life member and Golden Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She held master's degrees from both the University of Michigan and Wayne State University, in addition to being an honor life member of the West Virginia State University Alumni Association.

In 1979, she founded SHUGAR's, a Detroit-based publishing firm with The Purple Directory as its primary product. She was also a consultant to the National Funeral DIrectors and Morticians Association and to the Michigan Selected Mortician Association.

Her memory is being cherished by a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, many close friends, Central State classmates, and professional associates. Lavenia & Summers Home for Funerals handled the local arrangements.
