Edwards, Gertrude Alexandria  
Gertrude Alexandria Edwards Sept. 5,1912 – Jan. 11, 2015 Resident of Oakland Gertrude Alexandria ("Alex") Edwards passed away peacefully at age 102 on Sun., Jan. 11, 2015 in Oakland. She was born, the younger of two daughters, to Calvin G. and Margaret Oregon ("Orrie") Alexander Williams on Sept. 5, 1912 in Jacksonville, FL. After graduating from Stanton High School, she entered the Lincoln School for Colored Nurses, Bronx, New York and graduated as a registered nurse in 1935. She married her high school sweetheart, Arthur N. Edwards (who had followed her to New York) in 1938 and left nursing in 1942 to raise her infant daughter and assist her husband in his insurance and liquor businesses. She was an active alumna of her nursing class and its last surviving member. After her husband's death in Jan. 1973, she remained in New Rochelle, NY until 1999, when she moved to Oakland's Lake Park Retirement Residence to be closer to her family. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Marie Eloise Norton; son-in-law, John H. Norton, III; two grandchildren, Angela Norton Tyler and Douglas Arthur Norton (Ashante); and five great grandchildren, Kendall A, Tyler, John Calvin Tyler, Lucas Norton Jousse, Michael R. Norton and Jackson K. Norton. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Meredith Anne Norton on Aug. 2, 2013. At Lake Park she endeared herself to the staff and fellow residents by her pleasant and gracious demeanor and will be remembered as an avid bridge player. A celebration of life will take place 2:00 pm Sat., Jan. 31, 2015 at Lake Park, 1850 Alice St., Oakland, CA 94612.

Elam, Mercedes  
Mercedes Elam July 22, 1943 January 26, 2015 Resident of Hayward Mercedes Serrato Elam, 71, of Hayward, CA died of natural causes on January 26, 2015 with family and friends by her side. She was born to Filimon and Magdalena Serrato of Tinambacan District in the City of Calbayog, Philippines. She was the most beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. She will always be remembered for her generosity and kind heart. She was the type of woman to share all that she had even if she had very little to give. Mercedes is survived by her husband Robert Elam; her children Wilma Elam, Gilbert Elam, Elsie Elam Dalman; Grandchildren Noel Erediano, Jr., Noelynne Erediano, Ber-Mar San Diego, Meguila San Diego, Jerome San Diego, Helany San Diego, Alexandria Elam, Cheyanne Elam, Victoria Elam, Jasmine Elam-Silva, Jake Dalman and Lanajade Dalman. She also leaves behind her son in-law Joven Dalman and daughter in-law Tracy Elam. She was the matriarch of our family and in the time of darkness she was our light. Your light shines with us. We love you and we will miss you. Services were held privately.

Ericksen, John H.  
John H. Ericksen Aug. 4, 1922 – Jan. 20, 2015 Resident of Castro Valley John Henry Ericksen, a long-time resident of Castro Valley, passed away at the age of 92 in his home. John was born in Oakland, CA and graduated from University High School. He was a World War II veteran and served in the Army Air Corps. He retired from the Lawrence Livermore Lab after 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine, and he is survived by his son Steven (Danielle), his daughter Linda, and many family members and friends. A memorial luncheon will be held at the Kenneth C. Aitken Senior Center, 17800 Redwood Rd., Castro Valley, on Sat., Jan. 31st at 2 p.m.
