Houghton, Margaret Mae "Muggs" "Maggie"  
Margaret Mae "Maggie" "Muggs" Houghton July 27, 1920 - January 18, 2015 Hayward Margaret M. Houghton, 94, passed away peacefully Jan. 18, 2015, at her home in Hayward, CA. Born in Elgin, Iowa, and raised in Waukegan, Illinois, Margaret has been a resident of San Lorenzo and Hayward for nearly 60 years. She worked for over 20 years in the San Lorenzo Unified School District and spent many years as Secretary to the District Superintendent. Known for her organizing skills, outgoing personality, and as an avid reader, she continued to coordinate events for school district retirees, the Dublin Senior Center Reading Club, bridge and numerous other groups up until her passing. She was a member of Castlewood Country Club for over 50 years. In 1945 she married Walter T. "Sully" Houghton of Waukegan, Il. They shared over 50 years of married life. Margaret is survived by her two sons, Timothy and James, Tim's wife Mary, and Jim's partner Richard Contreras. She was predeceased by her husband, Sully. Margaret will be dearly missed by all she touched. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Sunday, January 25, 2015, from 2 to 4 pm at Sorensen Chapel, 1140 B St., Hayward. Lisa L. Ilkanic July 25, 1969 - Jan 10, 2015 Berkeley After many years Lisa lost her courageous battle with MS. Lisa was an accomplished educator, daughter, sister, aunt, godmother, wife, friend and God's warrior. Lisa attended California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks and California State University, Sacramento. Lisa was an passionate, skilled educator for the Fairfield Suisan School District. Kaneshige, Fred N.  
Fred N. Kaneshige Apr. 9, 1929 - Dec. 28, 2014 Resident of San Leandro Fred N. Kaneshige, born on April 9, 1929, died on Dec. 28, 2014 at home in San Leandro, CA. He was born in Seattle, WA, grew up in So. Park, WA and moved to Spokane, WA after the onset of WWII. He was also a Korean War veteran. In 1948 he helped move the family to Oakland, CA. He was a mechanic and owned two gas stations. Later he worked for BART. He married Kimi and had two children, Pamela and Jay. He later married Marcy, who predeceased him. He leaves his current loving wife, Akiko and son, Jay (Evelyn) and siblings, Don (Clare), John and Judy (Jim). A memorial service will be held on January 31st, 3:00 pm at the Buddhist Church of Oakland, 825 Jackson St.

Kitchin, Jacqueline Mae "Jackie"  
Jacqueline "Jackie" Mae Kitchin April 5, 1929 - Jan. 11, 2015 Resident of Hayward After several years of declining health, Jacqueline "Jackie" Mae Kitchin, 85, peacefully passed away Sun., Jan. 11, 2015. Besides her roles as wife and mother, Jackie was a hard-worker with a reputation for excellence, an accomplished seamstress, talented bowler, active community member, and ardent Oakland A's fan. Above all else, only one thing mattered in her life: family. Jackie is survived by her children Janelle; Michael and wife Betty. Jackie will be dearly missed by grandchildren Michelle, husband Alfred and daughters Thea and Ally; Ryan; Tami; Jason, wife Alicia, and children Jason and Jenna; Megan, her husband, and daughter Karen. Jackie will be missed by siblings Bonnie; Ed and wife Rose; Bill and wife Martha. A grave-side service will be held on Wed., 1/21, 2pm at Chapel of the Chimes Cemetery, Hayward. A memorial reception to follow at Clubhouse at Spanish Ranch-I Mobile Home Park, Hayward.

LaMotte, Jeanne Carol  
Jeanne Carol LaMotte March 18, 1927 Resident of Oakland Jeanne Carol LaMotte returned to our Lord and Savior on December 16, 2014. Born March 18, 1927 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to James Estel and Genevieve Lucille Alexander, she spent her youth on a farm in Moorland, Iowa and graduated from Moorland High. Soon thereafter, she and her family moved back to Fort Dodge. While in Fort Dodge, she helped raise siblings and enjoyed spending time with friends, and worked in a clothing store. She married Harry LaMotte, son of Robert and Alice LaMotte of Oakland, California June 29, 1958. Together, they moved to Florida and shortly thereafter, returned to Oakland. Carol became a housewife and mother to children Jeanne and John. Following her husband's death in 1970, she worked as a reading instructor for the Oakland Public schools. After attending and graduating from Merritt College, Oakland in 1980, she worked as an administrative assistant in an Oakland insurance office until retiring in 1993. Carol, an avid reader, enjoyed travel, staying in touch with family and friends, entertaining on all occasions, rummage sale bargains, and the English royals. As a member of Fruitvale Presbyterian Church and later College Avenue Presbyterian Church, she served as treasurer, deacon, choir member, and food distribution helper. Carol was compassionate, patient, generous, and forgiving. She is dearly loved and fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched. Carol is survived by daughter Jeanne Pinkler and her husband Darryl; son John LaMotte, his wife Laura, and their daughter Rebecca; brothers Jim Alexander, Dave Alexander; sisters Corinne Fox, Cynthia Dunlap and their families; and her many dear friends. Our sincere gratitude goes out to the staff of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland for their tender loving care. A Celebration of Life was held at College Avenue Presbyterian Church on Friday, January 2, 2015. Friends and family attended and shared memories of Carol. Luce, Maxine Mary  
Maxine Mary Luce Jan. 6, 1918 - May 18, 2014 Resident of Castro Valley Maxine passed away on May 18, 2014 in her home of 65 years. Maxine was born on 1/6/1918 to William & Gladys Donovan in Lincoln, CA. The Donovan family moved to Castro Valley early in Maxine's childhood. Maxine graduated from French Hospital in the early 1930's with a registered nursing license. She is survived by children Dowd Luce, Donna Townsend, Carrie Szulborski (and husband Paul) and grandchild Danielle Howell (and husband Kevin) and great grandchild Katherine Howell. Maxine was a true guardian angel assisting neighbors and friends with terminal medical issues. Maxine was a longtime A's fan going back to the late 60's. She belonged to the A's buster club and attended meetings until she could no longer drive. She also attended many A's games in Oakland. Special thanks to Ella Young who was our mothers home care nurse for over ten years. Ella's devotion allowed our mom to stay comfortably in her house until she passed away.

Mincey-Studley January 29, 1949 - January 20, 2015 Resident of San Leandro Mary Darlene Mincey-Studley, long-time resident of San Leandro, age 65, passed away at Eden Hospital in Castro Valley, on Tuesday, January 20th, 2015. Nielsen Sr., Harold W.  
Harold W. Nielsen, Sr. 1924 - 2015 Resident of Moraga HAROLD WAYNE NIELSEN, Sr. Harold passed away peacefully Monday morning, January 12, 2015 after spending Sunday with his beloved wife, Elaine. Harold was born in Oakland in 1924 to Amy Esther Engebretsen and Harold Wiig Nielsen. Attended Oakland High School, followed by UC Berkeley. He completed his education graduating from UCSF College of Dentistry in 1946 receiving the degree Doctor of Dental Surgery. Following graduation, Harold joined the U S Navy as an officer and was stationed in Kodiak Alaska. In 1948 Harold opened his dental practice on Park Blvd in Oakland. He retired in 1990. Harold Married the Love of his life, Elaine Springer in 1978. He was a devoted husband and family man, so very proud and Involved in the lives of his four children, Wayne, Jenny, Lee and Hugh and his eleven Grandchildren and eight Great Grandchildren. Harold is survived by his friend and brother, Fred Nielsen. He is predeceased by his beloved sister, Marilyn Nielsen Law. Harold felt a strong calling to give back to community. He was involved in many community organizations. He was a 65 year member of Kiwanis Club of Oakland including past President and Lt. Governor. He held leadership roles in Alameda County and California Dental Associations and was past President, UC San Francisco Dental Alumni. He was Past President of the American College of Dentists, Northern California. Harold most enjoyed the relationships and people that he met and worked with in his community involvement. Many became lifelong friends. Harold loved people and valued friendships. His personality was warm and engaging. He had a gift to encourage and help people feel good about themselves. He and Elaine are members of the Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church in Orinda. He enjoyed being inspired by the Word of God every Sunday. A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, January, 24th at Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2433 Moraga Way, Orinda at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kiwanis of Oakland Scholarship Foundation, supporting graduates of the Oakland Public Schools with college scholarships. O'Hearn, Jerome  
Jerome O'Hearn Sept. 28, 1928-Dec. 30, 2014 Concord, CA Jerome Richard O'Hearn Sr., age 86, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2014 in Concord, California. He was born September 28, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri to Joseph and Lula O'Hearn, the second of four children, and recalled fondly his childhood in Missouri. After joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 1945, Jerry learned his trade as a cartographer, serving in the Korean War printing maps from March 1951 to March 1952. His Marine career also took him to Virginia and eventually to California, where he served until his retirement from the Marines at the rank of Master Sergeant in 1968 and where he raised his family. Jerry loved his four children, Eileen, Michael, Jerome Jr. and Brian above all. He was also a cowboy at heart who loved all things horses and could often be spotted in a cowboy hat in his later years. After leaving military service, Jerry worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Sacramento, California as a lithographer and printer. He retired as Chief, Reproduction Branch in 1986, giving him plenty of time to enjoy his pastimes of golf, roller skating and ballroom dancing. Jerry also was an ardent investor and wasted no opportunity to discuss the latest stock market news with friends, family and caregivers. Jerry is survived by his four children, Eileen Horton (Terrence); Michael O'Hearn, Jerome O'Hearn Jr. (Danyiel) and Brian O'Hearn (Juliet), four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters: Renae Heffernan and Jane Long of St. Louis and Jean Sharp of Colorado Springs. Funeral services will be privately held. Memorial donations may be made in Jerry's name to The Wild Horse Sanctuary, PO Box 30, Shingletown, California, 96088.
