Bernard F. Roberts DDS, a long time local dentist, passed away quietly in his home on October 24, 2012, just two days shy of his 94th birthday. He was born October 26, 1918, in Alameda to Bernard "Ben" F. Roberts Sr. and Marguerite Catherine Lane Roberts. A 2nd generation Alamedan, he attended Lincoln Grammar School; lettered in sports and graduated with honors from Alameda High in 1937; completed his pre-dental curriculum at UC Berkeley; and, served as Student Body President before graduating with honors from the College of Physicians Surgeons Dental School in 1943. He was immediately commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in WWII for the U.S. Navy. Upon his return in 1945, he married Harriette Elizabeth "Hughes" Roberts, and opened his local practice on Central Avenue in 1946 where he cared for his beloved patients until he was forced by an injury to retire at age 90.Dr. Roberts was a long time member of the Alameda County Dental Society, President of the Alameda City Dental Group in 1947-48, a life member of the Alameda Elks Lodge No. 1015 and a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West. He served on numerous committees to award students with college scholarships. He helped establish the AHS Boosters in the 1970's and worked on the "football chain-gang" for many years. He served twice on the Alameda Parks Recreation Commission, and ushered for decades at St. Philip Neri Church. He was an avid Cal fan, and volunteered as an official at Cal Track meets.
Dr. Roberts is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Harriette; one daughter, Lynn Marguerite; and, his only brother, Thomas Roberts, who was a dentist in Oakland. He is survived by 5 children Carol Diamantine - husband Richard, Patricia Kirscher - husband Gary, Michael -wife Claudia Zdral Roberts- deceased, Kathleen Valerio - husband Dennis, Mary Angela Hart - husband Michael; and ten grandchildren: Lindsay, David, Trent, Vanessa, Rebecca, Ian, Amanda, Thomas, Caleb, and Charlotte.
The family will host two events in Bernie's memory:
#8226;Sunday, Nov 25, 2012 - 2pm visitation, 3pm Rosary followed by the Elks Memorial Service at the Alameda Elks Lodge #1015 located at 2255 Santa Clara Avenue Alameda, CA 94501
#8226;Saturday, Dec 8, 10:30 am Funeral Mass will be held at St Philip Neri Catholic Church. 3108 Van Buren, off High Street in Alameda.
