Chiling Mai Hammer, East Bay teacher, mother, and friend, died peacefully after a four year battle with metastatic breast cancer on June 12. Chiling was born in Taiwan, moved with her family to America when she was eight, gave her high school valedictorian address and was the first in her family to attend Cal. Chiling's passion for teaching was heartfelt and lasted throughout her life. She received a Masters in Education from Mills College after she gave birth to two beautiful sons, and went on to become a beloved teacher's coach. Chiling is survived by her husband, sons, sister, brother, mother, extended family in Taiwan and many loving friends. Her life, and spirit, were love and light.
