Doris Ellen McVicker passed away in her sleep on October 14 with her husband and son at her side. Doris was born in Denver, and when she was ten, her family moved to Oakland, CA. When she was twelve, she met the love of her life, fourteen-year old Donald McVicker at a teen club dance. They were together ever since. They married in 1951 and settled in Hayward, where Don worked as a firefighter. In April of 2012, they relocated to an independent living facility in Tracy.
Doris is survived by her husband of 63 years, Donald McVicker, daughter Terrie Rowe and son-in-law Robert Rowe of San Lorenzo, son Michael McVicker and daughter in law Shari McVicker of Tracy, her sister Dorothy Wight of Redwood City, and brother Stanley Wanner of Angels Camp. She leaves five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
She and Donald were very active when they lived in Hayward. They spent countless hours side by side building the Howard Janes Building at the Walpert Center for the developmentally disabled, and also fund raising for the project. When Don retired from the Hayward Fire Department, they created a social club "The Hayward Firefolks" for retired firefighters and their spouses and organized camping trips and dinners for the club. The family spent many summers at Lake Tulloch when thier children were growing up, and in their later years, Don and Doris loved camping in their motor home.
Doris was outgoing and funny and loved by many for her kindness and wit.
A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, November 5, at 10:30 am at Hotchkiss Mortuary, 5 W. Highland Blvd in Tracy.
