Edwin Wallace Finnell, 94, of Alameda, California passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2013. He was born in Ector Texas, on August 1, 1919, the son of Eli and Jessie Mae Finnell. His siblings: Bill Finnell, King Finnell and Mary Pennington, preceded him in death. He is survived by nieces: Candy Kiesaw and Betty Ann Sellers both of Texas and a nephew, Allen Pennington, also of Texas. After graduating from Ector High School in 1937, he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served for the next 20 years, including the Pacific during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was then employed at the Naval Air Station in Ordinance at Alameda until his retirement. He was married to Pat Finnell for 51 years and they had two daughters: Janice Severs of Castro Valley and Sandra Finnell of Alameda, who preceded him in death. He is survived by four grandchildren: Jacob, Luke, Sarah and Hannah Severs of Castro Valley.
His first wife, Martha, had five children: Mary Ann Slaby of Washington, D.C.; John Finnell of Dayton, Nevada; Linda Hilken of Alameda, California, Nina Finnell-Hernandez of Antioch, California and Al Finnell of Matthews, North Carolina. He is survived by eight grandchildren: Lisa Shoffner of Castro Valley; Cindy Finnell of Alameda; Brenda Ellis of Fort Benning, Georgia; Rachael, Stephen and Kimberly Finnell of North Carolina; and three great grand children: Sebastian Rojas Finnell of Alameda; Deirdre and Oren Ellis of Fort Benning, Georgia.
Family and friends may visit on Wednesday, October 30th after 9:30am and are invited to attend the Funeral Service, also on Wednesday, at 10:30am, all at Greer Family Mortuary, 2694 Blanding Ave. in Alameda. Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland.
