Elsa Saville Oct. 23, 1914 - Dec. 24, 2013 Resident of Oakland Elsa Saville born Oct. 23, 1914, and a part of the Oakland Montclair business community for over 30 years, died Dec. 24, 2013 at her home in Oakland. She was 99. Elsa had operated Quality Cleaners in Montclair, where she also designed and fitted women's clothes as part of the business. Men were delighted when she provided a room for their alterations. She often noted with a wry chuckle, 'they beat a path to my door.' Elsa retired in 2007 at the age of 93. Remarkably, she was in fine health, and spirits almost until she died on this past Christmas Eve. Asked about how to remember her, she said, "tell people I've enjoyed life and done the best I could. I think I was healthy partly because I enjoyed working and meeting people every day, from being a seamstress in the Depression times in Pittsburgh, PA where I was born, to coming to Oakland in 1947. I worked here, and then with my husband in Los Gatos until he passed on, and I returned here in 1977. Work, doing what you love, gives dignity to a human; it lets us practice the art of living. It lets us travel. I've been to 20 countries. Work lets us learn, I went back to college at St. Mary's in Moraga at 78; I'm so grateful to them. I went back to dancing and learned the tango and the rumba when I was 88, and that's another art. So don't mourn me. Instead, think of me sometimes, when the sunlight glistens on our beautiful San Francisco Bay. To attend Elsa's burial at sea, Sun., 1 pm, March 16, 2014, call The Neptune Society at (510) 451-0887.
