Lawrence (Larry) Hemenez Jr., 87, of Hayward, CA passed away October 20, 2013. Larry was a first generation American and resident of Alameda County for nearly 86 years. He was born on January 16, 1926 in Honolulu, HI to the late Lorenzo and Marcelena Hemenez, who immigrated from Spain in the early 1900s. Larry married the late ShirleyAnn Powell of Castro Valley on May 31, 1947 and was married for 42 years. He retired from General Motors, where he worked for more than 35 years. He is survived by: three children Lauren Ogbourne, Michele Baskett, both of Modesto, and Lawrence (Larry) Hemenez III of American Canyon; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by two sisters and seven brothers; and is currently survived by two sisters: Carmen Borges and Marcie Lambly, both of San Leandro. Larry served in the U.S. Army during WWII receiving recognition for combat action in the Philippines and New Guinea. He enjoyed a life-long interest in rebuilding and restoring, fabricating, working on and showing classic cars. In his early years he participated in hot rod racing as a car owner at the old Oakland Speedway in San Leandro. Viewing will be October 24 at Santos-Robinson Mortuary, 160 Estudillo Ave., San Leandro from noon to 7 p.m., followed by a Vigil at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be held October 25 at All Saints Catholic Church, 2nd and D Streets in Hayward at 10:30 a.m., followed by internment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward.
