Melvin was born in Monroe, Louisiana on June 27, 1941 to Joe Henry and Edna Jackson. Melvin relocated to the Bay Area in 1964.
Melvin served in the Army in 1967 for two years, as a forward-one observer, on the front lines in Vietnam. He initially worked as a Brakeman for Southern Pacific Railroad, and then transferred to Amtrak, as a Conductor. According to his colleagues, he was the ultimate example of service and charm and was well respected. After 45 years of combined service, he retired in 2010.
He leaves to cherish his precious memory; wife Davia, Oakland, CA, three daughters, Toi Stevens, Fife, WA, Crystal Riley (Dedrick), Fairfield, CA, Khaliah Neal (Charles), Brooklyn, New York, two sons, Chersancio Jackson, Monroe, LA, Lawrence Thibodeaux, Oakland, CA; one brother, Otha (Annie Ruth), Bastrop, Texas; two sisters, Billie Joyce, Arlington, TX, Mary Lee, Monroe, LA; five grandchildren, Marcus, Ajia, Chyna, Asha, Dedrick, Ziyon; great granddaughter, Mya, and a host of relatives, friends and colleagues.
Visitation will be held from 2pm - 7pm Thurs. at CP Bannon Funeral Home, 6800 International Blvd., Oakland. Funeral Services will be at 11:00am, Fri. Dec. 20th at Acts Full Gospel Church, 1034 66th Avenue, Oakland. CP Bannon Funeral Home
