Percy Horace Amos Sr.

PERCY HORACE AMOS SR. Sunrise: June 20, 1904 Sunset: August 9, 2003 Mr. Amos was born June 20, 1904 in Lake Charles, LA. He was the second born of eight siblings of Mr. Horace and Mrs. Clara Amos. His early school years were spent in Mound, LA. As an adult, he moved to Houston, Texas and was hired as a chauffeur, this took him throughout the United States, thus was born his love of traveling. In Houston he met and later married Brunella Mullone. This union lasted 74 years, until her passing on 8/23/03. They were the proud parents of four children, Percy, Jr., Yvonne, Lucille and Florence. In 1941, after World War II had started, he went west to Richmond, CA. There he operated a flower nursery. Later he was employed by Todd Ship Yard II, gaining the position of foreman, where Liberty ships were being built to carry troops over seas. In June 1945, he moved his family to Oakland, CA. He later owned and operated the Signal Service Station, on the corner of Sacramento & Ashby Streets in Berkeley, CA. Being an avid outdoorsman and a member of the East Bay Rod and Gun Club he ventured north to Alaska on a hunting trip. He and his wife moved to Anchorage, AK. in 1951, remaining until 1962. Returning yearly to Alaska, he drove the Alcan Highway (Canada-Youkon Territory-Alaska) 42 times until 1976. He returned to Anch, AK in May 2003 to attend his great-granddaughter Shawna's graduation from high school. It was there at his daughter Lucille Cole's home that he quietly passed away. Mr. Amos was preceded in death by his beloved wife Brunella, grandson Kendrick "Jerry" Miller, great-grandson, Chemar Metters, parents Horace and Clara, brothers Paul, Herman, Royal and Morris, sisters Rebecca, Willie Mae and Juanita. Cole, Berkeley, CA; brother Nathaniel (Myrtle) Amos Sr. Grandchildren: Karen Matthews, Anch AK, Gayle Carter, Atlanta, GA., Keith (Darlene) Brown, Anch, AK, Cheryl Miller, Anch, AK, Sheila Payne, Ft. Worth, TX, Angie Royal, Antioch, CA, Theresa (Brian) Chapman, Oakland, CA, Dino Blackburn, Oakland, CA; Robin (Ernest) Barden, Anch, AK, Rosalyn Cole, LTC USAF, Wash. D.C. Carol Amos, Hayward, CA, Cynthia Amos, Oakland, CA, Danny B. Cole, Sr., MAJ USA, San Antonio, TX, Paul (Lisa) Cole, Seattle, WA, and Percy H. Amos III, Oakland, CA. Twenty seven great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral Service will be Friday, August 29, 2003 11:00 am in Bethany Baptist Church, 5400 Adeline St., Oakland, CA 94608. Pastor: Dr. L. P. Lewis.
