Secondo "Second" Merletti was born on March 26, 1914 in the town of Cumberland on Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada. He was predeceased by his brothers (Charlie and Bruno) and sister (Lena). In pursuit of better employment opportunities, Second and his family moved from Canada to the United States in 1937, settling in San Francisco, California.
Second entered the United States Army on July 6, 1943, and was granted his naturalization later that year. Following his training, he served as a firefighter with the 1933rd Engineer Aviation Utility Company in Hawaii. He received his honorable discharge February 12, 1946, with the rank of TEC 5 (Corporal).
Following WWII, Second worked for The New Mission Tile Co. in San Francisco, as a tile setter for 20 years. After that, he went on to work for San Francisco Municipal Railway (MUNI), maintaining the underground cable car tracks. He worked with MUNI for 10 years before retiring in 1976.
On October 10, 1967, he married Helen Brusaca, where they resided in San Francisco until relocating to Fremont, California in 2008.
Second was an accomplished fisherman, frequenting San Francisco's Lake Merced at least twice a week. He was also an avid Oakland A's fan, where he attended many games with his wife.
Second and his wife lived the past four years at a board and care home in Fremont, California, where they received excellent love and care from Larry and Zora Cayabyab. He is survived by his nephew Ray Allara and his wife Janet, his stepson Fred Brusaca and his wife Linda, and his grandchildren Gina Brusaca and Jason Brusaca and his wife Christina.
He was loved by his family and will be sorely missed.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 11, from 10-11am and a Chapel Service will begin at 11am at Fremont Chapel of the Roses, 1940 Peralta Blvd., Fremont, CA 94536. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma, CA.
