Steve Johnson(1925 - 2014)

Steve Johnson
September 6, 1925 - July 9, 2014
Longtime Union City Resident
On July 9th our beloved dad passed into eternal rest joining his father Peter Johnson, mother Martha Johnson, brother Bill Johnson, and sisters Mary D'Zurko and Ethel Jameson.
Steve was a proud Dad, Papu, Theo, Greek-American, and former United States Marine. He was born and raised in Fresno, CA with his brother and four sisters during the Great Depression. He enlisted in the USMC in 1944, and after serving his country in WWII, he started his longtime career as a donut maker and bread baker.
During this time he married, and then fathered and raised his 2 sons, Peter and Mark. He instilled in his sons, through example, that hard work, honesty, integrity, humor, and love, would be the way to a happy and meaningful life.
An avid sports fan, he turned his love of sport into a second occupation as a baseball and softball umpire, as well as a basketball and volleyball referee. Steve loved to travel and explore new places. Other hobbies included reading, and volunteering at various animal shelters.
He is survived by son Peter Johnson and his wife Ruth, son Mark Johnson and his wife Jan, sisters Tula Gavrilis, and Georgia Stringer. He is also survived by four granddaughters, Melissa, Jessica, Amanda, Rebecca, and his great granddaughter Bryelle.
Memorial services will be held on Monday July 21, 2014 at 11am at Chapel of The Chimes in Hayward, CA. A reception will follow the service.
Interment will be Tuesday July 22, 2014, 1:30pm, at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, CA.
