Boyd McCaslin Obituary

Boyd McCaslin
July 24, 1925 - July 1, 2013
Resident of Fremont
Boyd McCaslin passed away July 1st at Kaiser Hospital in Hayward. He was born in Bremerton, WA, to Louis and Hattie McCaslin. Boyd graduated from Bremerton High in 1943, playing basketball and baseball, and enlisted in the Navy V-12 Officers Training Program. He managed to play five years of college basketball at Hobart College (NY), Dartmouth College (NH), second team All-Ivy League, and three years at the University of Michigan, including a 1948 Big 10 championship and NCAA tournament appearance. He also played in a college all-star team victory in Chicago against the Harlem Globetrotters, 51-50, who had beaten the NBA champion Minneapolis Lakers with George Mikan the week before.
Boyd began his high school teaching and coaching career in 1949 in Wayzata, MN, where he met his wife, Darlene. They spent two years in Watertown, SD, before Boyd became the head basketball coach and math teacher at Bellingham High in Washington state. In his first year there, he took his team to fourth in the state tournament, having beaten his alma mater Bremerton and coach Ken Wills 3 times during the season. Boyd enjoyed fishing and hiking with many teacher friends and also worked on the reef net crews in the summer fishing for salmon.
In 1960, the family moved to Fremont, CA, and Boyd took a teaching and basketball coaching job at Arroyo High in San Lorenzo. Boyd had many fine teams over 23 years at Arroyo with the highlight being the 1966 Tournament of Champions victory in the final game over McClymonds High of Oakland, 55-53, at Cal's Harmon Gym as well as appearances in the tournament in 1970 and 1973. Boyd was highly respected by his players and officials alike and truly loved the game of basketball, logging countless hours of four-on-four pick-up games with students, alumni, and anyone who might wander into the Arroyo High gym in the summers and after school. His one-legged, one-handed fade away push shot was his go-to shot, and his players still talk about it today. Boyd's famous one-liners like "Cock your eye and let 'er fly" and "Get set and swish the net" always brought a smile to everyone's face.
After retiring in 1985, Boyd joined SIRs and became an avid golfer, traveling and playing in many tournaments in California and Nevada with his golf buddies. He even made a hole-in-one twice! He also worked part-time for Enterprise Rent-A-Car, moving vehicles to Bay Area locations. Boyd will be deeply missed as he was always there for his family, willing to help others, and do his work to his very best.
Boyd is survived by his loving wife of sixty-two years, Darlene, beloved sons Jim (Anita), Tom, and Ted (Deborah), grandchildren, Scott and Erin, and sister, Carol McDougall. A private graveside service will be held.

RIP Coach for all you did for us during my years at Arroyo. You love for basketball rubbed off on a lot of us especially me. So thankful for all the time you dedicated to the summer time open gyms at Arroyo, you helped shape a lot of players. Of course playing for you was a great, loads of offense and encouragement, and proud our 73 team delivered to you your last championship.

To my father-in-law that I knew for 11 short years. I will always remember the songs you sang and asking me how my job was. You really enjoyed your basketball. Always talked about David Lee. We will salute you with strawberry milkshakes and a Diet Pepsi. Thank you for your love and support. Your daughter-in-law, Deborah.

He was a wonderful teacher. I was not very good at Algebra (I had him in the early 80's at Arroyo), but somehow his style & personality made it fun/a joy to be there. Thank you and Rest in Peace Mr. McCaslin. :)
