Candace Martinez Obituary

Candace Susan Martinez
Feb. 26,1946-Mar. 30, 2013
Resident of Fremont
Candace was born in Cohoes, NY to Charles Henry and Lorraine Meyer Martinez. She grew up in southern California, completing high school in Tustin, BA at Cal State Fullerton and MA at UC Irvine. A perpetual student, she returned to school in the 90's, completing a BS at Cal State Hayward.
Candy bounced around the world as an Air Force wife with her first husband, Jan Lewanski, landing in San Antonio, TX where she met her second husband and life companion Warren Brown. She joyously escaped from Texas to become a "born-again Californian" when Warren shifted careers from Silicon Gulch to Silicon Valley in 1984.
Candy had a 16-year career as a Communications Consultant with AT&T. Her own informal CV said, "I have an MA in history, specializing in the Ancient Near East. I have a BS in Geology. I've had a few things published in unremarkable pubs. I read a lot on the subjects that interest me. I've been a substitute teacher, stable boy, busgirl, waitress, telephone solicitor, technical analyst and consultant. I've worked for oil companies, electronics companies, the phone company and the State of California. I worked with the Society for Creative Anachronism as an editor. Oh yeah, I also worked in a convenience store and was a greeter at the San Antonio Convention Center. I've also given riding lessons. I won a couple of games on Jeopardy. I feel that I've left something out, however." Indeed.
Candy will be remembered for her sparkling wit, ready friendship, dry humor and disturbing fondness for puns. She touched many lives in the Society for Creative Anachronism, west coast science fiction fandom, and west coast teddy bear communities. She and Warren travelled widely to volcanoes, museums and historical sites around the world, but Candy always wanted broader horizons and regretted not reaching even more destinations.
There will be no formal service, per Candy's request. Visit her online memorial site at http://eurypteridchowder.org. For those interested in memorial contributions, please donate in her name to EFBC's Feline Conservation Center, 3718 60th Street West, Rosamond, CA 93560 (http://www.cathouse-fcc.org).

So very saddened to learn of Candy's passing.
She and I were in the San Fernando Valley together and I lost track of her when her family moved to Tustin.
Candy was one of those, today, to whom I would say "I have been, and always shall be, your friend."
RIP dear one
