Jewell Inez Freidenberg passed away peacefully on April 30, 2013 at the age of 90. She is survived by her loving son David Freidenberg and his wife Deanna of Seattle, her loving daughter Debbie Laris of Castro Valley, and her loving grandchildren Aaron, Julia, Lauren, Christine, and Jordan. She will be sorely missed by her lifelong companion Tom Milam of Modesto. Dearest sister of Imogene Green, Sam Rice, Ann Moyer, Leon Rice, and Jerine Belluomini. She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm Freidenberg, her sister Vernie Rice, and brothers Ewell, Bill, and Alfred Rice.
Jewell left her home in Arkansas in her early twenties and came to California with her best friend Magdalen. She was a journeyman welder in the shipyards in Richmond during World War II. She retired from San Lorenzo School District as the manager of the cafeteria of Marina High School in San Leandro. She loved gardening at home as well as ballroom dancing at the Ali Baba Ballroom in Oakland. She traveled the world with Tom and always had wonderful stories to tell about their adventures. She was a deacon at Christ Presbyterian Church in Washington Manor. Her children and grandchildren were the focus of her life. She was an incredibly independent woman way ahead of her time. She will be missed by all who's lives she has touched.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 4th at Jess C. Spencer Mortuary, 21228 Redwood Rd. in Castro Valley (510-581-9133). The Celebration of her Life will begin at 12:00 with internment following at Lone Tree Cemetery in Hayward followed by a reception at the home of her daughter where all are invited. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Oak Creek Alzheimers & Dementia Care Center, 6127 E. Castro Valley Blvd., Castro Valley, CA 94552
