Martha DeHart Obituary

In Memory of Martha Louise (Simon) DeHart Mar. 17, 1920 - Oct. 2, 2013 Resident of Fremont Martha, known to family and friends as 'Weezie', passed away at home Oct. 2, 2013 in Fremont. She was predeceased by her dear husband, Thomas E. DeHart in 2011. Weezie is survived by her brother, Richard (Dick) Simon; children, Thomas E. DeHart Jr. (Yetta), Kathleen (Kit) Hagie (Laird), William (Bill) DeHart (Cindy Soliday). She is also survived by her four grandchildren, whom she adored, Benjamin DeHart (Rosemary), Elise and Patrick DeHart, and step-grand daughter Emily Calantoc (Travis Sanders). She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Weezie was born, and grew up in Mansfield, Ohio. Her family moved to Piedmont, CA in 1937, she graduated from Piedmont High School in 1938. She then attended UC Berkeley. She married her husband, Tom, in 1939 after eloping to Yuma, Arizona, much to the chagrin of her father. They were married for 72 years, happily disproving her father's judgment. Her hobbies and interests included volunteering with many charitable organizations, extensive travel, and gardening. Weezie and Tom were original homeowners in the Mission Ranch area of Fremont, and had their home for 53 years. Weezie was very proud of the fact she was one of the first "Welcome Wagon" representatives in the Mission/Irvington area, and years later she was often called "The Welcome Wagon Lady". She also wrote a column for the local newspaper (News Register) called "Meanwhile in Mission Ranch". Along with her husband, Weezie was one of the founders of Special Metals Supply, Inc. For many years she worked as office manager, and was instrumental in helping to position the company for future growth. Weezie had a lifelong commitment to the Christian faith. She was a living testament to her beliefs. She was a member of the Fremont Congregational Church (UCC) for over 55 years, and was committed to their mission of helping the needy of Fremont. Memorial services will be held privately by the family. If you would like to remember Weezie, donations may be made to: Tri-City Volunteers, 37350 Joseph St., Fremont, CA 94536 or Abode Services, 40849 Fremont Blvd., Fremont, CA 94538.

I was the Dehart's neighbor since 1996. I know Tom and Martha very well. They picked up my kids a few times from elementary school. I was their first line of defense for any home maintenance issue. I used to ask their advice on how fix things when I first moved it. I will cherish the plants Martha gave me and they will be on my front porch for years to come in her memory. What an exemplary couple! I am fortunate to have known them. The photo attached was taken when she invited us for lunch.
