May Chung Obituary

May Chung
July 12, 1918 - April 21, 2013
Resident of Castro Valley
May Jing Chung, 94, of Castro Valley, died on April 21, 2013 from lung cancer. She was born in Oakland, California on July 12, 1918.
May met and married Sen Chen "Daniel" Chung in China. They lived briefly in San Francisco before returning to the Chung family farm in Jacksonville, Florida. May ran the business side of the farm. In the late 1950's and early 1960's, she and her husband owned and operated "Oriental Gift Shop," at that time the only Asian specialty store in Jacksonville. In May 1961, she and her family moved back to California. She and her husband owned a grocery store in Alameda until her retirement in 1979.
In retirement, May and her husband took trips to China and the Pacific Northwest. She was a member of the Oakland Junior Women's Chinese Club and volunteered for many activities. May's greatest accomplishment and pride were her children.
May is survived by Jeannie Chung (daughter); Stephen 'Wes' (son) and Emma Chung; Robert Chung (son) and Kathleen Rose; and three grandchildren, David, Matthew and Eric. May was preceded in death by her daughter, Gwendolyn and her husband, Daniel.
