My condolences to the French family and to Iris. I first met Ray through his daughter, my friend, Beth while we were in high school together. He helped me get my start with Safeway and was my first teacher of the ins and outs of the grocery business. This introduction paved the way for me continue on a successful career path. My heart goes out to his family for their loss.

First met Ray while attending WWII Rockford reunions with my father, who was one of Ray's shipmates. I cannot express how much I enjoyed meeting him initially and then getting to know him over over several subsequent reunions. He was a great storyteller and always a total gentleman. He will be missed terribly by all I am sure.

Our deepest condolences to Iris and to the family. Norman served on the Rockford with Ray during the war and I first met him at Patrol Frigate reunions. He will be missed.

I first met Ray in 1960. He was a newly appointed store manager with Safeway managing the store on Seminary and Camden in Oakland. I was told by my current manager that he was an up and coming star, and that proved to be true. At the time I was a relatively new clerk with Safeway. I later had the opportunity to work with Ray while I was a district manager. He was my field merchandiser for variety. Ray's work, whether he was managing stores or merchandising was first class and his work ethic was impeccable. I always admired his dedication and perseverance. There was only one way to do a job with Ray and that was the right way. On several occasions I asked Ray to share his vast knowledge of inventory control (when he managed that team) with the managers I supervised and he did so willing and as usual in great depth. He always conducted himself with dignity and commanded respect.

I didn't know Ray long, but I was so touched by how wonderful a man he was. We visited a number of times and I learned about his beloved baseball carreer, and how much he loved his family.
He told me how much he respected and adored Iris and how much he hated to depend so much on her.
He will be missed greatly. My heartfelt condolences to Iris and the entire French family. Your father was very special.
