Richard John Freitas passed away peacefully at home on March 13, 2013, after bravely fighting several health issues. Richard was born on May 18, 1942, in Oakland to John and Mary M. Freitas. He grew up in the family home, built by his father, in the Oakland hills. An avid car enthusiast, he loved working on them and talking about them. In his early years, Richard and his buddies built cars and raced them at the Fremont Drag Strip. Richard first worked as an auto mechanic and later worked for several years at Hayward Ford, Towne Ford in Redwood City and Perotti Motors in Fremont as a service manager. For the past several years he worked on his 'project' of restoring his beloved 1986 El Camino.
He was married in 1965, to Sharon Richardson. In 1982, he met his second wife Zola Hudson. He started his second career when he and Zola became apartment & maintenance managers for Arthur apartments in Hayward, a job they held together for more than 21 years. Richard took great pride in his work, always giving it his best. He had a quiet, but deep love for his family and friends. We all will miss him.
He is predeceased by his father John (1976), mother Mary (2002) and wife Zola (2011). He is survived by his son Keith Freitas (Monica) of Clayton, his sister LaVerne Bellmer (Richard) of Livermore, his brother Len Freitas (Terry) of Manteca, Granddaughter Carissa Hudson Martinez (Efrain) of Oakland, Grandsons Austin & Ryan Freitas of Clayton, Great-Grandchildren Karisa, Miguel, Sergio, Pamela & Priscilla Martinez of Oakland, nieces, nephews, aunts, & cousins.
The family wishes to give special thanks to his Granddaughter, Carissa, and good friend Sally Chapman for caring for Richard throughout the past years. The family also wishes to thank Gentiva Hospice of Pleasanton & their nurses for their care during his final days.
Friends & family are invited to attend the Funeral Service on Monday, March 25th with visitation at 10:30 am & service all at 11:00 am at Holy Angels Funeral & Cremation Center, 1051 Harder Road, Hayward, CA., 94542, where services will conclude.
