Scott Lunger Obituary

Sergeant Scott Lunger
March 13, 1967 - July 22, 2015
Resident of Contra Costa
Scott Paul Lunger was born March 13, 1967 in Hayward, California. He graduated from Dublin High School in 1985. After high school, Scott attended Diablo Valley College and Chico State, where he played football. He entered the IBEW Local 595 Electrical apprenticeship and worked his way up to General Foreman. Scott changed careers and was hired by the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department and graduated with the 109th Alameda County Sheriff's Department Academy Class in 2000. He started working for the Hayward Police Department in May of 2001 where he found his true calling. Scott worked as a beat cop as well as serving on various specialty units such as the special duty unit, gang task force, SWAT, he was a Field Training Officer, was promoted to Sergeant and was an acting Lieutenant in recent months.
Scott was an avid A's and Packers fan and enjoyed attending games with his girls. It was all about the green and gold for Scott, except for when he was wearing his blues. He enjoyed coaching his daughter's softball teams when they were young, and was an assistant coach for the Freedom High School girls' softball team as well as volunteer coaching at several other local schools. Fishing, snow skiing, playing Cowboy in Idaho with his brother in law Lance, and playing golf with his brother Mike and his nephew Tate, were also things Scott enjoyed immensely.
Scott was preceded in death by his mother Alice Lunger and is survived by his daughters, Ashton and Saralyn; his brother Mike and his wife Shey Lunger; his brother Todd Lunger; his sister Michelle Schroeder and her husband Lance; his father Paul Lunger and his wife Donna; and half sister Ciara; and his nieces and nephews Lindsey, Gabrielle, Trenten, Tate, Brena, Shauntee, Ambra and Thomas.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew & loved him.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 29th from 4:00pm to 9:00pm at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home, 32992 Mission Boulevard in Hayward. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, July 30th at 10:00am at the Oracle Arena, 7000 Coliseum Way in Oakland. The funeral will be followed by private interment ceremony.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I can truly say I understand your pain. My husband was a police officer with Oakland Police Dept. for 28 years. He died tragically 6 years ago. I just want you to know, Scott Lunger will never be forgotten. Hold on tight to your memories and share them with many. Remember it's okay to cry, to be angry and sad. But most of all, it's okay to smile and be happy. There is no right or wrong way to mourn. Remember you are loved and supported by many.

It sucks to hear that such a warm kind hearted man who changed careers to protect and serve others was suddenly taken without reason. It was such an honor and privilege to witness the entire communities in Hayward, Dublin, Pleasanton, Oakland, unite together and honor a "warrior" a hero. It was a beautiful honor and heart sympathizes to his family and friends. God needed a "warrior" and he called on the best!

My husband was a Santa Clara County Reserve Officer. He eventually retired with no problems. He use to express how tough society had become. I prayed for his safety no matter what his assignment was. He to had a big heart. He once was assigned to the the juvenile section and this one young man kept asking all day if his father had arrived to visit. Of course my husband had to say no. So when my husband was off duty he changed his clothes and became the visitor the young man had waited for all day. Yes every officer should be commended and prayed for every day. May God bless his family and every officer out there and keep all of you protected in the Palm of His Hand.

Lunger family,
I am visiting friends in the Bay Area, & am deeply saddened to hear of the senseless loss of your loved one's life.
My heart aches for you & I pray that God's love & your faith in Him, as well as your many wonderful memories of precious time spent with Sergeant Lunger, loving & being loved by him, will sustain you & will enable you to smile through your tears in the days ahead.
Lean on the Lord, on each other & on the many friends who loved Sergeant Lunger enough to extend their love & support to you.
Sergeant Lunger would have been so proud to have witnessed your loving tributes. I, a stranger to your family, felt so proud of each of you, as I watched & listened to your beautiful words & songs.
My prayer is that the Lord will continue to strengthen, bless & keep each of you.
Ashton & Sarah, how blessed you were to grow up with such a loving & supportive father. What a much better world we would live in, if all children grew up knowing a father's unconditional love!

With deepest & most sincere sympathy,
Andrea Hughes

I remember running around the playground at Cronin playing dodge ball and flag football. It just isn't fair I never had the chance to get to know the man from the boy on the playground. I wish we would have bumped into each other at the grocery store in Brentwood if nothing else to say Hey. I salute you Scott for being the kind of person we all can look up to and aspire to be. May God keep you and bless your family with his peace always. Terri Clark Dublin Class of '85

My deepest condolences to all the Lunger family. My family knew Scott when he was a boy living in Dublin,Ca.He was an outstanding young man and best friends with my son Dan Mcnay. We loved Scott as part of our family. We moved away from Dublin in the eighties and as life goes lost contact with the Lungers but never forgot Scott. I am not surprised that he became a great police officer and served the city of Hayward. No words of mine can relieve the sorrow that the Lunger family is feeling right now but in time God's hand on your heart will. Thanks for your service buddy. I know we will meet up again

From the moment we first met Scott Lunger, we loved him..funny, caring, articulate, compassionate...he lived next door to my ranch and eventually I taught he and Christy to ride and we ended up having their family horse, Bubba, board with us....the girls would come swim in our pool on hot days, Scott did some electrical work for us, and many of our friends, during his time in school to become a police officer. When I asked him why he wanted to get into law enforcement, because of the risks involved, his answer then actually summed up his entire life since then. "I just want to help people"...It was an honor to know him, to see him become the outstanding citizen, officer that he has become. He will be missed by so many. My heartfelt condolences to his family....
