Claude D. Causley|
Oct. 3, 1926 - Oct. 9,2013
Resident of San Leandro
Claude is survived by his loving wife, Leta; son, Gary Funston and his wife Joyce of Dairy, Oregon; daughter, Linda Hjertager of Anderson Calif.; stepson, Arthur Schmitt of San Leandro; stepdaughter, Juanita Perry and her husband Guy of Carson City Nevada; sister, Bonnie Halligan of Manzanillo, Mexico; niece, Barbara Murray and her husband Keith of Hayward; and niece, Lace van Devender of Sacramento.
Claude was born in Eureka, California and moved to the Bay Area when he was 3 years old. Growing up, he was active in the Boy Scouts and played in the school band. Claude graduated from Castlemont High School in June 1944. He then went to work for Malsbury Manufacturing Company, first as a Production Supervisor and then as an Industrial Engineer. While working for the Malsbury Manufacturing Company, Claude served as Program Chairman, First Vice President and President of the East Bay Industrial Management Club. He also stayed involved with the Boy Scouts, becoming a Scout Master, and continued to pursue his love of music, working weekends as a musician. Claude loved working for the Malsbury Manufacturing Company, but when the Oakland plant closed and the company moved to Pennsylvania, he decided not to make the move. Wanting to stay in California, Claude took early retirement and followed his true love, music.
Over the course of his career as a musician, Claude played banjo and bass in many different bands and a wide range of venues, including bands at Marine World, Clancy's Irish Pub, and Straw Hat Pizza in San Leandro and Fremont as well as in Hawaii. He was a member of the Oakland Banjo Band for 47 years, serving as President of the Band for 28 of those years. He was also a member of Banjos USA, The Peninsula Banjo Band, Kapalani Strings and the Kamakanis.
At Claude's request, no memorial services will be held. BUT... he did want a jam session and party at no other place than Porky's Pizza Palace, 1221 Manor Blvd., in San Leandro. For information, call 510-562-6827.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Music For Minors II, 37141 Second St., Fremont, CA 94536.
