She was born Elena Ann Lawler in Lowell, Massachusetts, on Oct. 22, 1933, to Dr. William S. Lawler and Elena Mahony Lawler. She attended Lowell High School, and graduated from Millington High School in Tennessee. She graduated in 1955 with a degree in education from Atlantic Christian College in North Carolina.
After college, she moved to the San Diego area and taught elementary school in Lakeside. She met Dave, who was stationed on a Navy ship in Coronado, and in 1959 they each moved to Oakland, where she was a teacher. They married in 1960 and moved to Alameda in 1969, where they have resided ever since.
Elena had been active in the Alameda Family Service League and served as its 1972-73 president. She worked at The Factory bookstore, Wells Fargo Bank, and later worked as a bookkeeper and at H&R Block, retiring in 1994.
She was a very sweet and thoughtful person who cared about others more than herself. She loved her family and friends dearly, and was a long-time parishioner of St. Joseph Basilica. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, listening to Neil Diamond, and eating lobster. She will be missed by many.
Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, at St. Joseph Basilica, 1109 Chestnut St. in Alameda. Private interment services at St. Joseph Cemetery in San Pablo. For further information please call: Harry W. Greer, Funeral Director (FDR-745).
