Frederick William Dorn Nov. 5, 1947 - Dec. 28, 2012 Resident of Hayward, CA Fred passed away suddenly during the evening of Friday, Dec. 28, while on a weekend trip to Las Vegas with his wife Dianne. Fred was born to Marie Altenbach and Adam Dorn in Columbus, Ohio, and attended St. Leo's Catholic Elementary School and South High School before enlisting in the Marine Corps at 17 years old. He experienced beautiful San Diego while in boot camp and thereafter became a Californian. Fred served in Vietnam with the 81 mm Mortar Platoon, 2d Battalion Fifth Marines, 2d Battalion 1st Marines, First Marine Division. Fred served proudly and courageously in Vietnam with the Marines during 1965-1966, received two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained, and was medically discharged in 1970. Fred joined the California Highway Patrol in 1971 as an Automotive Service Man in the Contra Costa office. He continued his education at Los Medanos College and was a reserve Contra Costa Sheriff's Deputy on weekends. Fred was accepted into the CHP Academy in Sacramento in 1977 where he met his great friend and first partner, Mike Brown, who was later to serve as Commissioner of the CHP. Fred spent most of his CHP career at the Hayward office and also served in the Santa Fe Springs, Oakland, and San Francisco offices, retiring in 2000. Fred's favorite post-retirement part-time job was as Security Supervisor for the Oakland A's. Others were security for the Shorenstein Hays Nederlander theater organization and as a Court Attendant for the County of Alameda. Fred married his wife Dianne in 1982, and together they shared a wonderful life filled with love, friends, family, travel, and work. Fred was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law, Paul and Gemma Meiller. He is survived by his wife Dianne, daughters Tina (Jeff) Wilkins and Tammy (Pat) Biesemans; sisters Alice (Bob)Swartz, Betty (Alan) Lorenz, Mary (Manny) Kamvouris, Janet (Kenny) Binder, Margaret (Andre) Gregory; brother Dana McArtor; Aunt Wilma Kenyon; ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. Fred and Dianne's four other families include the California Highway Patrol, the Deputy Sheriffs of Alameda County, the United Church of Christ, and the Browning family of Whitstable, Kent, England. A memorial service will be held at Eden United Church of Christ, 21455 Birch Street, Hayward, 94541, on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. , lunch reception to follow immediately. Child care provided. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made in Fred's honor to the CAHP Widows and Orphans Fund, P.O.
