Gloria Everett Collins Obituary
Gloria Everett Collins
May 27, 1943 - October 9, 2013
Former Resident of San Leandro
Gloria Everett Collins lost her courageous battle with cancer on October 9 with her husband at her side. She is survived by her loving husband, Terry Collins and their Greyhound, Dagny. She and George Everett of Berthoud, CO were the devoted parents of Susan Everett (Lance) Van Dyke of Brighton, CO. She was the adoring grandmother of Sephira Rose VanDyke. Gloria is also survived by her mother Annie Salsedo of San Leandro, sister Nancy (Jim) Meyers of Clio, CA, nieces Elise (Amal) Wootton of Elk Grove, CA and Wende (Patrik) Jorgensen of Petaluma; and grand nephews Jeff and Julian Wootton, and Bendt Jorgensen. She was loving, generous and a friend to all who knew her.
Gloria was born and raised in San Leandro. She graduated from San Leandro High School in 1961, earned a degree in mathematics from UC Davis and completed the Stanford University Graduate Program for Executives. Gloria was an accomplished businesswoman. She had an extensive executive career in telecommunications engineering. She was responsible for building one of the first cellular systems in Los Angeles for the 1984 Olympics and culminated her career as the Operations Vice President who personally launched one of the Nation's first telephone satellites. She was recognized as an Outstanding Business and Professional Woman of the Year, and by Forbes Magazine as one of the Nation's Most Powerful Women in Business (2002 and 2003). In 2001 was named one of the top women in wireless communications by Wireless Week Magazine.
As an active professional woman, Gloria was a member of the Commonwealth Club of
San Francisco and the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. She served on the advisory board of the Executive Women's Alliance, as a member of the San Francisco Civil Grand Jury, the Stanford Business School Mentor Program, and the Navy League.
Gloria lived life to the fullest, traveling much of the world, playing golf, learning to play the bass guitar, and enjoying everything she tried and accomplished. In recent years, she loved doing many activities, relaxing and travelling with her husband Terry to enjoy the best in food and wine. She loved to spend time with her friends and family, showing them in so many ways how she cherished and loved them and cherished life.
Gloria was preceded in death by her father, John Salsedo of San Leandro. Gloria was a loving, generous, and cheerful person and remained so right through to the end.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, October 18 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lombard Funeral Home at 1550 Fulton Avenue, Sacramento. A memorial vigil service and mass will be held on October 19 at 1 p.m. at St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish at 3235 Arden Way, Sacramento 95825.
In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests donations, in loving memory of Gloria, to the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Program (R.C.I.A) at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish; this Program led Gloria back to God and with her husband Terry cemented their Catholic faith together forever.
