Obituary Condolences

HAMPTON BARNETT A longtime civic, social and business leader in Oakland passed away July 14, 2004. The 83 year old retired insurance officer succumbed to prostate cancer after a fifteen year battle with the disease. Mr. Barnett served his community in many capacities as a member of the Public Charities Commission, Area Development Committee, Urban Redevelopment Committee, Committee on Full Opportunity (COFO) and the Senior Citizen Advisory Board. He was a lifetime member of the N.A.A.C.P. where he served for many years as a local officer, member of the Board of Directors of the Bay Area (5 counties), Urban League, member of Men of Tomorrow Inc. and for several years an active member of the Hampton University Alumni Association. After retiring from Allstate Insurance Co. Mr. Barnett maintained an active and busy schedule of volunteer services in the Oakland school system and at the Downtown Oakland Senior Center. He also assisted and tutored children in an after school program at his church. Mr. Barnett leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife of 52 years, Johnella; his daughters, Rosaland, Veronica and grandson, Joel Hampton. Preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Malinda Faye Hampton. Also leaves four sisters, Lillie Mae Wise, Verita Tidwell, Ernestine Leneoln and Virginia Tates and two sisters-in-law, Sue Basy and Janice Saunders; one brother, L. Asriol Barnett and 11 nieces, 7 nephews and many other relatives and friends. Services to be held Tuesday, July 20th at 11 a.m., Zion Lutheran Church, Park & Piedmont, Oakland, CA. Interment at Evergreen Cemetery, Oakland, CA. Funeral arrangements entrusted to McNary-Morgan-Greene & Jackson Mortuary, 3630 Telegraph Ave., Oakland, CA 94609, 510-845-2132, FD632.
