Harold Perry Obituary

Harold Leonard Perry, Sr. Dec.15, 1933 - Apr. 30, 2009 Harold, known to many in the Bay Area as "Hal" Perry passed away peacefully on April 30, 2009 at the age of 75 after a brief illness. Harold was one of five children born to Charles and Verna Perry. He was the brother of Charles (deceased), Rubin, Manuel and Barbara (Perry-Daniels). He was the father of Harold Jr., Eric and Gale. Harold was born in Madison, Illinois. After his family moved to California in 1947, he spent most of his school years in Ukiah where he participated in school government and, in his senior year, was elected Student Body President. He was active in the school choir and band as well as the community. He also played many different sports and lettered in basketball, football, track and field and baseball. Harold was awarded a basketball scholarship to attend the University of San Francisco (USF) upon graduating from Ukiah High. He played guard on the two USF Don's NCAA Championship Teams of 1955 and 1956 with K.C. Jones and Bill Russell. In 2008, he was inducted into the USF Basketball Hall of Fame. In the same year, he was also inducted, along with other sports legends in Oakland, into the African American Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame. In February of this year, 2009, he along the other teammates of the legendary 1955 and 1956 Basketball Teams were honored at USF. Harold, "Hal", was a well-known civil rights attorney in Oakland for many years and also worked in the District Attorney's office. He shared his free time working with a number of Oakland civic organizations and various youth committees where he touched many lives. Harold enriched his life with his faith and he has been an active member of the Third Baptist Church in San Francisco and Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland. He leaves his family members and friends with many fond memories and we will miss his kindness and positive spirit. Service will be held Thursday, May 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Fouche's Hudson Funeral Home, 3665 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland, California. Public viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the USF Alumni Association, San Francisco, California.

He and his sister were honored at the Ukiah High School graduation in 2000. I had heard lots of stories about him and I was impressed with the little speech he gave. He was a credit to Ukiah and the high school. I would have liked to have met him. I'm sure he's the point guard on the angels basketball team.

Dear Perry Family,

What sad news to hear of Harold's passing.
Darline and I think of you often and I was telling a friend just this morning about Harold, the great "Don's" and about the day Harold brought his teammates home for the weekend and shooting some hoops with Harold, KC & Bill.
What fun memories I have of Harold. He had a great sense of humor. I remember playing tag football with Harold and Manuel in the freshly plowed field behind your house in Ukiah. When I was lucky enough to catch him he would briefly throw the ball up in the air when I tagged him and that meant my tag didn't count! He got a big kick out of that.
Charles Sr., Verna, Charles Jr., Reuben, Harold, Manuel and Barbara, It seems just like yesterday! I can still hear the music!
God Bless.

Dear Mrs. Daniels and Family:

We were saddened to hear about the loss of Hal. It's difficult at a time like this to find words that say the things that one can only hope will comfort you today, but may it help to know that there are near at hand those who keep you close in prayer, thought and understand your sorrow at this time.

I will always remember the great senior basketball games that we participated in and the great enjoyment we shared when we
always walked away with the "gold medal". For he was the clutch player during those last few minutes who always said come on "guys" we can win this game!

Please accept our condolences and deepest sympathy at this time.

Cleveland ("Pete") & M. Pearl Mckinney

Dear Perry Family
I met Harold at your house in Ukiah in 1954. My brother was a classmate of Manuel, and I was along that day and met Harold and his college team mates. I vagily remember but I was five at the time, They did sign the back of a 49er team picture for me. It was Bob Toueff, Harold Perry, K.C. Jones, William F. Russell. Little did we know how much history was there that day. I just ran across that picture a few days ago. God Bless Harold and the rest of your family.

I was a college classmate of Hal and a good friend during college years. He was a fine basketball player and a good man. I haven't seen him in many years, but I will always hold fond memories of our association. May God rest his soul.
