Herbert Halliday June 17, 1921 - May 19, 2010 Resident of Castro Valley Herbert Halliday of Castro Valley, California and formerly of Wilmington, Delaware, and Clearwater, Florida passed away on Wednesday, May 19, 2010. He was 88. Born in Delaware on June 17, 1921, Herb was a graduate of P.S. duPont High School and attended Goldey Business College. He began working as a clerk for the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1938, and he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, specializing in radar operations in New Guinea in the Pacific. Upon his return from military service, he married Ruth Sampsel Adams of Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1946. He also continued his railroad career during the next four decades, eventually becoming Manager of Locomotive Operations for AMTRAK in Philadelphia. He retired 1981 and moved to Florida with Ruth. A life-long fan of the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team, Herb worked for the team in Florida during Spring Training season for many years starting in the 1980s. He and Ruth also enjoyed travelling throughout the United States and Canada and visiting major league ballpark cities. Herb was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Delaware Lodge No. 1 in Wilmington. Herb and Ruth moved to Castro Valley in 2003 to be closer to their daughter, Hayward City Council Member Barbara Halliday and son-in-law Richard Imsdahl of Hayward. Herb continue to follow major league baseball and participated in many activities and events at Baywood Court where he and Ruth lived, including serving as a member of the Residents' Association board and as a Non-strolling Player. In addition to his wife, daughter and son-in-law, Herb is survived by a brother, Francis Halliday; sister-in-law Lillian Coleman; and nephews Charles Coleman Jr. and Steven and David Halliday, all of Delaware. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Herbert Halliday and Hazel Halliday Dannaker; his son, Donald Herbert, and two brothers, Stanley and Eugene. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 11, at First United Methodist Church, 1183 B Street in Hayward. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Herb's honor to the Baywood Court Residents' Association/ Employee Scholarship Fund and sent to Baywood Court, 21966 Dolores Street, Castro Valley CA 94546 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
