Jeanne Gallagher Obituary

Jeanne McCune Gallagher
Sept. 27, 1924 - July 12, 2013
Resident of Alameda
Jeanne McCune Gallagher died peacefully at home in the company of one of her sons and her daughter on Friday, July 12, 2013 at the age of 89. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 20 at Christ Episcopal Church in Alameda where she was a longtime member.
Jeanne, or Grammy/Great Grammy as she was known to her six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, was born in Surprise, Neb. She married Dale McFarland when she was 18 and was widowed at age 19 when he was killed in WWII air combat.
She attended Long Beach City College and UCLA and met Charles Gallagher in 1947 on a blind date. They were wed the following year and were married until he passed away in 1974. They had four children - Charlie, Steve, John and Elizabeth ("Buffy"). The family moved frequently and lived in CA, Louisiana and TX.
Jeanne returned to school at age 43 and earned her BA and a master's degree in library science. She worked as a librarian for Union Oil in Southern California until the late 1980s. She moved to Alameda, CA in 1991 to be near family.
Jeanne was a talented cook and seamstress. When her oldest son married, Jeanne took the young bride under her wing and helped teach her the basics of cooking. Jeanne sewed beautiful dresses for her daughter and made two prom dresses for her granddaughter. She redesigned her daughter-in-law's wedding dress into a beautiful christening gown for her great-granddaughter.
Jeanne is survived by her four children - Charles (Mary Ellen), Steve, John (Susanne) and Buffy, grandchildren Jennifer, James, Morten, Andy, Peter and Jordan, and great-grand children Susannah and Keeva.
