Resident of Hayward
Joanne D. Kyle, whose life suddenly expired, while traveling with members of the Senior Citizens group of Hayward's All Saints Church. Her parents were Cornelius and Marguerite Hickey and her birth occurred in Oakland's Providence Hospital Her younger siblings are Cornelius (Neil) hickey and Carolyn Mae Morgan.
Joanne was a member of the 1948 class at Holy Names High school. Approximately two weeks prior to graduation, unaware that she was Diabetic#184; she suddenly experienced a diabetic coma and was hospitalized. Joanne was briefly excused from the hospital so that she might receive her diploma after which, she was promptly returned to the hospital bed for a rest and continued testing of her blood sugar levels using the limited techniques of that era.
In those days a teen aged diabetic could expect death before age 30. As a consequence, the Holy Name Sisters cancelled the earlier agreement to become a member of that Religious order of Nuns and educate her to the level of competence needed to teach at their several schools in California.
Joanne took a job at what is now the Wells Fargo Bank on Grand Ave in the area closest to Oakland's historic Grand Lake theater.
Joanne met her husband, John Kyle, when both attended evening classes at the American Institute of Banking facility in an older Oakland building on Broadway near 14th street. John was entranced by Joanne's physical beauty, self control on the matter of advisable avoidance of sweets and alcoholic refreshment. All that in addition to their sharing of the Catholic Faith.
They were married on September 5, 1953 and had thoughts of another 'Honeymoon' on their 60th anniversary. Four adult children survive her; Winifred, wife of Paul Garavatti and mother of one son and four daughters. Sean, husband of Dorothy and father of a daughter and son. Nora, wife of Robert Benson and mother of three daughters and four greatgrandchildren. Timothy, father of a daughter and son.
Final viewing of Joanne will commence at 4:00 PM on Monday March 4 at Holy Angels Funeral Cremation Center, 1051 Harder Rd. Hayward. Fr. Tony Herrera will preside at the separate services at 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at All Saints Church in Hayward on Tuesday March 5 at 10:30 AM. Burial will occur at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery after Mass.
