Ned Allen Flanders, PhD Feb. 21, 1918 - May 29, 2011 Resident of Oakland Born in Paso Robles, CA, he grew up in Berkeley. He was an Eagle Scout, cellist, woodworker, rock climber, skier, hiker, tennis player, choral singer and director, and he also enjoyed barbershop quartets. In 1940 Ned graduated from U.C. Berkeley in Chemistry and Music. Following a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Oregon State College, he served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. Then followed a PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Chicago. He was on the faculty of the University of Minnesota, the University of Michigan, Mills College and U.C. Berkeley. The recipient of two Fulbright scholarships, he was also a Fellow at The Center For Advanced Studies of the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, a recipient of the Crystal Apple Award from the California Council of the Education of Teachers, the Gold Apple from the Graduate School of Education at Berkeley, and the Trustee's Citation of the University of California. In addition to many articles and papers he published "Interaction Analysis in the Classroom", a systematic procedure to analyze classroom interaction. Survived by Mary Powell Flanders, his loving wife of 67 years. He was the proud father of their daughters Margaret Darby (Peter), and Kathleen Rich (Bill), four granddaughters, and four great grandchildren. A memorial is pending.
