Richard Mesak Obituary

Richard "Dick" Henry Mesak Homebuilder/Restaurateur Resident of Redwood City Richard ("Dick") H. Mesak passed away peacefully October 8, 2009 at his home in Redwood City with his wife by his side. Dick was born March 1, 1920 in San Francisco to Estonian born parents, Captain Edward and Marie Mesak. Dick attended McKinley Elementary School, Everett Jr. High School, and Mission High School in San Francisco. He was a member of the Mission High School 1936 Championship Football Team and Hall of Fame and attended St. Mary's College on a football scholarship. He played there under the famous coach, E. P. "Slip" Madigan. Dick also played for the 1939 Cotton Bowl Championship Team. He was later inducted into St. Mary's Football Hall of Fame in 1974. Dick served in the United States Navy from 1941 to 1945 with the first group of Sea Bees (The Bobcats) in the Pacific. After the war, Dick played football for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League. He also played for the Clippers in the Pacific Coast League in San Francisco, and was a member of the NFL Alumni. Dick was also a member of several other organizations which included a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans, past Senior Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, past Vice President of The Homebuilders Association, past member of the San Mateo County Horsemen's Association, past Captain of the Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County, and member of the Shack Riders Club. Dick was also a past member of the Palo Alto and Shoreline Golf Clubs and a life member of the Redwood City Elks Club. Dick was a founder of the Circle Star Theater in San Carlos and was also the former owner and operator of the Circle Star Restaurant. He was a lifelong avid sportsman and fisherman. Preceded in death by Jeanne and Jeannine Mesak, his wife and daughter and Charles Mesak, his brother. Surviving are his loving wife, Ada Mesak, Redwood City; a son, Richard Mesak, a daughter-in-law, Susan Mesak, and a granddaughter, E. McKenna Mesak, Pescadero; a stepson, Bruce Paisley, Vancouver, Canada; a nephew, David Spain, Windsor; and two nieces, Pamela Ellings, Washington and Leslie Sherwin, Carmel Valley. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Veterans Hospital in Palo Alto. No formal services will be held.

Biff and I are saddened to hear that Dick Mesak is no longer with us. He gave so much to his country and fellow man. He will be missed by all who's lives he touched. Please accept our sincere sympathy. Peggy and Biff Bafigo.
