Roy George Meyer

Roy Meyer passed away peacefully at his home last Friday after a brief illness. He was 87 years old. Born to Clara & August Meyer and raised in Oakland, CA, Roy attended St. Elizabeth Elementary and High School. Following graduation, he followed his older brother, Gilbert, and enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. He participated in the Normandy invasion and fought on Utah Beach, D-Day 1. He later was part of the first wave of Allied Forces that fought in the Battle of the Bulge where he was severely injured by a shell explosion and later hospitalized in Paris. For his bravery, he was awarded the Purple Heart. Following the war, he met the love of his life, Norma, on a blind date. Norma preceded Roy in death last year. They were married on January 28, 1950 and were wed for 62 years. Norma & Roy settled in and were longtime residents of Castro Valley. Roy was a devoted company man and skilled tool and dye maker and was employed by Listo Corp. for over 38 Years. In addition to his skills in the tool and dye business, Roy was an accomplished carpenter and jack of all trades. He enjoyed remodeling his as well as other relative's homes. He volunteered many hours at his Church, Our Lady of Grace in Castro Valley, as well as at Mission San Jose in Fremont. In addition to his volunteer work, Roy was a devoted husband and father to his two sons and a loving grandfather to his 5 grandchildren. Roy's favorite pastime was vacationing in the Sierras at Pinecrest, CA with Norma and family. Roy & Norma will be greatly missed and their fully lived lives and devotion to family and friends will continue to inspire.
Roy is survived by his two sons, Dave & Paul (Loretta) and his 5 grandchildren: Jaime (Patrick Lucarelli), Scott, Lauren, Christopher and Devon. A Memorial Mass will be held to celebrate his life on Saturday, December 28, at 10:00 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, at 322 St. James Drive, Piedmont, CA, the church where Roy and Norma were married.
