Sept. 30, 1940 - June 13, 2013
Resident of Berkeley
Solomon Wheat was born in Alexandria La. on 9/30/1940 and passed away 6/13/2013 at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, Ca.
Sol was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and teacher. Sol approached life and people with humor and much love.
For 45 years, Solomon was married to Becky Wheat. Solomon was the love of Becky's life always offering support, encouragement, and a good laugh! Solomon was also loving father to Caitlyn and Derek, again always encouraging, supporting, and offering his wisdom. Solomon madly loved and was adored by his six grandchildren (Sean, Madison, Ryan, Michael, Tayo and Lola). Solomon loved being a grandpa, he found special qualities in each grandchild, and he was always rooting at their sports games and encouraging them in their studies.
Solomon was a teacher for 32 years, he loved teaching and learning, and was so proud of his four college degrees, including a Masters from U.C. Berkeley. Solomon will be remembered by many as a person who cared deeply about them,. He always took the time to engage, encourage, and teach.
Solomon leaves behind his wife Becky, children Caitlyn Odunuga (Tola) and Derek Wheat (Patrina), amazing grandchildren: Sean, Madison, Michael, Ryan, Tayo and Lola. His siblings, Samuel, Dorothy, Michael, Charles, and William Wheat Jr.) His parents and brothers David, Donnell and Melvin preceded him in death.
Flowers and contributions would be appreciated at Berkeley Food and Housing or the Alameda Food Bank.
The family would like to thank the amazing doctors, nurses, and staff at Alta Bates Berkeley and Herrick Hospitals, who provided Sol with the highest quality of care.
A memorial is planned for July 27, 2013 at 2 pm at Epworth United Methodist Church located at 1953 Hopkins Street, Berkeley.
