William H. Choy Obituary
William H. Choy
September 19, 1926 - July 12, 2014
Resident of Fremont then Vacaville, CA
Born in Honolulu during the year of the dragon, Bill Choy attended the University of Hawaii for two years before becoming a civilian apprentice for the US Army Air Corps. After enlisting in the Air Force in 1951 during the Korean War, his first assignment took him to Germany where he served as an instrument mechanic. He was honorably discharged in 1953.
While Bill humbly called himself a "tinkerer", he was in fact no ordinary repairman. His "tinkering" could make or fix anything. He started a restaurant with no restaurant experience at all. He built a house with no construction background. He did not simply roast coffee beans, he roasted 50 pounds of beans at a time! When his coffee roaster broke, he took it apart, found the defective element, and fixed it. Nothing was out of his reach. Inspired by George H.W. Bush, Bill insisted on skydiving on his 80th birthday. Upon landing, his first words were, "Let's do it again!"
Bill had a lifelong love for music and enjoyed dancing. He had an extensive collection of HiFi albums ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Artie Shaw.
Bill spoke of treating everyone the way he would want to be treated, and he lived by that simple rule.
He will be missed by his wife of 58 years, Margaret Choy; his children Bill Choy, Lani Choy Frost, and Jennie L. Williams; his loving grandchildren Brittany, Amber, Daniel, Sean, William and Jacob; and the many friends, co-workers and acquaintances who were fortunate to have known him.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial luncheon in Berkeley on Sunday, August 24, 2014. For more information, please contact
