John "Jack" Walsh Obituary
JOHN (JACK) WALSH
May 20, 1921 - August 7, 2014
Resident of Oakland
On August 7, 2014, John (Jack) Walsh rejoined his late beloved wife of 49 years, Maureen Murphy Walsh, in a waltz that has been postponed for 7 years. Jack was a native of Dublin, Ireland. He arrived in New York in 1949 and took a Greyhound bus cross-country to Los Angeles. He got his Masters Degree in Math and his first teaching job at Frick Junior High in Oakland. He loved to dance and was always the first one out on the dance floor. He met the love of his life, Maureen, at one of the many Irish social dances in San Francisco. He taught at Merritt College for almost 40 years and even now is remembered by students he mentored and encouraged. He loved adventure and travel and as a teacher was able to arrange 2 year-long teacher exchange trips to England and a sabbatical year in Ireland - bringing the entire family along. He enjoyed camping, nature and and beautiful surroundings and spent many happy days in Bodega Bay and Yosemite Valley. He loved literature and the arts and was a faithful annual attendee of the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, OR. For many years, he acted with a Bay Area repertory theater group, performed at Murphy's Irish Pub in Sonoma playing the accordion and the tin whistle and, costumed as St. Patrick, led the McBride School of Irish Dancers in the annual San Francisco St. Patrick's Day Parade. Jack was the loving father of Tom (Sandi), Eileen, Anne Marie, Rosie and the late John Brian (1970-1971) and the proud grandpa of Rene. He loved his sister-in-law Joan Purcell and all the Purcell family, his late brother-in-law Joe Murphy (Nancy) and all the Murphy family and countless other family members and friends. He reveled in the company of his "brothers" in the Ancient Order of Hibernians and his fellow trail walkers at Lake Chabot park. The family wants to thank the nurses at Pathways Hospice and Right At Home home care, especially his care-giver Lisa, for all their loving and tender care and attention. Thank you for helping us make his final months so happy and comfortable. Friends and family are invited to visit Sunday August 17 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Santos Robinson Mortuary 160 Estudillo Ave. San Leandro and beginning at 5:00 pm at St. Paschal's Catholic Church, 3700 Dorisa Avenue, Oakland and attend the Rosary at 7:00 pm. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, August 18 at 10:00 am, at Saint Paschal's Catholic Church, 3700 Dorisa Avenue, Oakland. Internment follows with a private ceremony at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma. In lieu of flowers, the family would encourage donations to The in honor of Jack's wife and their mother, Maureen, who was taken from them far too soon. Jack never ceased to miss her loving companionship.
