Donald Thurman

Obituary Condolences

Donald Leonard Thurman Aug. 25, 1933 - May 26, 2010 Resident of Hayward Donald "Don" Leonard Thurman passed away peacefully Wednesday morning. "Always a Marine", Don was seldom seen without a cap with the Marine Corps Insignia. Don was born in Yakima, Washington to Lyle and Grace Thurman and was one of 11 children. Don attended school in Washington State and later completed his studies in San Lorenzo, California. While a Marine, Don married in Texas and started plans to raise a family. After service in the US Marines, Don left Texas for short stop in Washington State before settling in California. He went to work for Canned Foods Distribution in Oakland until a fire closed the Center, and then he went to work for Porters Market in Oakland. Soon he was blessed with a daughter and moved his family to San Leandro's Washington Manor Area. Not long after, Porter's Market relocated to the same area of San Leandro and the store he loved for 37 years was again part of his neighborhood. Known to many as the "Green Grocer", Don enjoyed stocking the produce and shopping for the freshest products in the early mornings. Always, the character, it was impossible to go down the produce isle without him kidding with you or checking on the latest news. In retirement, he would travel the area in his car and started to deliver dealer cars throughout the area. He loved to drive, give his opinion to all who would listen and enjoy watching people. He spent his final years in Hayward but was always seen visiting his old neighborhood and talking to the people he met through out his 76 years. Don is survived by his daughter Teresa Glaze and her husband Bob, Teresa's Mom Angie Thompson and her husband Tom, his grandchildren Crystal and Brian Glaze, sister Elaine Rader and her husband Clarence, brother Bill Thurman and wife Jill, and his sister Carlene Creiger. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends that will truly miss him. Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Wednesday evening June 2, 2010 from 4:30 - 8:00 p.m. and a funeral Service on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at the Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd in Hayward. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request donations are made in Don's memory, to the Marine Corps League, Det # 919, San Leandro Veteran's Memorial Building, 1105 Bancroft Ave. San Leandro, Ca. 94577.
