Joan Marie Mullen
June 14, 1939 - November 3, 2012
Resident of Fremont
Joan Mullen, daughter of Raymond and Margaret Mullen died at home on November 3, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Oakland, she grew up in East Oakland. Joan graduated from Bishop O'Dowd High School in 1957 and Holy Names College in 1961. After graduation she became an elementary school
for the Fremont Unified School District at Oliveira School. She educated and enriched the students at Oliveira for 39 years until her retirement in 2000.
Joan was involved in numerous activities both during her teaching and retirement years. She traveled to many countries but especially loved Ireland. She was an avid Bridge player, water aerobic teacher, volunteer at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, a Red Hat Lady, and involved in other social groups and activities. Every day during her retirement she had some activity planned. She will be missed by her special friends that she shared so many activities with.
Joan is survived by her brother Jim Mullen (Helen) and sister Jane Gates (Gary). She was aunt to Ray and Sheamus Mullen and Kathleen Leclair (Craig) and great-aunt to Chloe, Danny, and Mateo Leclair. She is also survived by several cousins dear to her heart.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 7, from 5:30-8pm with a Vigil at 7pm at Fremont Chapel of the Roses, 1940 Peralta Blvd., Fremont, CA 94536. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, November 8, 10am at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 37588 Fremont Blvd., Fremont, CA 94536. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward, CA.
