Wood was born in Carmichaels, Pennsylvania to Albert and Margaret Hathaway and passed away in Alameda, CA at the age of 87. He was a resident of Alameda for 62 years. While stationed at the Oakland Naval Supply during WWII, Wood met his future wife, Gladys Glazier. They were married for 56 years. He retired after 35 years at Wells Fargo Bank and then went on to be Manager of the Webster Street branch, Alameda First National. Wood was an active member of Rotary and was involved with Alameda Men's Golf Club, the Elks Club and the Encinal Yacht Club. He enjoyed playing golf and quality time with his grandchildren.
Wood was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gladys Hathaway; parents, Albert Margaret Hathaway; and brothers, William Jack Hathaway. He is survived by his children, Susan (Larry) Hengl of Moraga, Steven (Gloria) Hathaway of Alameda, and Sherry Birkestrand of Twain Harte; grandchildren, Nicholas Andrew Hengl, Laura Lisa Hathaway, and Tyler, Todd, Scott Sarah Birkestrand; and loving friend, Carol Seagren.
To honor Wood's life, family and friends are invited to attend a Visitation on Thursday, November 8, 2012 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Greer Family Mortuary, 2694 Blanding Ave., Alameda. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Grandview Pavilion, 300 Island Dr., Alameda.
