Shirley Jean Hagens May 15, 1923 - Oct. 17, 2012 Resident of Oakland Shirley Jean Hagens of Oakland died Oct. 17th 2012 at 89 years. She was raised in small Texas towns by her parents Alfred and Maybelle Hagens along with her two brothers. She played saxophone and clarinet in high school and at Incarnate Word College. She received a graduate degree in Microbiology from University of Texas. She moved to California to pursue her career in the new field of Virology. She was associated with UC Berkeley and worked at the State Health Department for 37 years. In retirement, she continued to support community music programs and encourage student exposure to classical music. She also worked on behalf of the hearing impaired and was treasurer for the Hearing Loss Association East Bay Chapter until the time of her death. She is survived by a first cousin Dorothy Allen of Albuquerque, New Mexico and many friends in the Bay Area. Burial has taken place in San Antonio, TX. An informal memorial and time of sharing will be held on Nov. 17 at 2:00pm at Piedmont Gardens 110-41st St., Oakland CA 94611. Mission Park Funeral Chapels North (210) 349-1414
