Marian Highsmith (Groth) Landreth Obituary
Marian (Groth) Highsmith Landreth
Resident of Oakland
Our beloved mother passed away peacefully on February 26th at her residence at St. Paul's Tower retirement home in Oakland, California. She is survived by her children Douglas (Debra) Highsmith of Danville, California; Richard (Carleen) Highsmith of San Ramon, California and Robert Highsmith of Stockton, California, and six grandchildren: Jeannie, Richard, Christina, Robyn, Veronica and Morgan. Marian was preceded in death by her husbands Richard Highsmith and Douglas Landreth, two sons: Patrick and Thomas, as well as her brother Walter Groth.
Marian was born October 14, 1925 in Madison, Wisconsin to Walter and Erna Groth. They relocated to Springfield, Massachusetts. She attended primary and secondary schools in Springfield where she "skipped" two grades. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in the class of 1946, with a double major of chemistry and mathematics at the age of twenty, summa cum laude. She was a lifetime member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. After college she moved to San Francisco where she took a job with Shell Laboratories.
Marian met her first husband Richard "Dick" Highsmith and they married at the Piedmont Community Church in 1947. They settled in Piedmont, California where they raised their five sons. She was active in church activities and was an avid bridge player (Life Masters). They also belonged to the Sequoyah and Claremont country clubs where she was a weekly golfer for many years. Her husband Dick passed away in 1978.
In 1989 she married Douglas Landreth. They lived in the Hiller Highlands area of Oakland for the remaining years of Doug's life. They traveled, vacationed at Tahoe and had a good life together.
Marian was a kind, considerate, compassionate, and very generous person. She will truly be missed by all who knew her. A grand lady.
Services for Marian will be held at the Piedmont Community Church, 400 Highland Avenue, Piedmont, CA and a reception immediately following at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland.
In lieu of flowers Marian's family prefers donations be made to a scholarship fund in her memory at Mount Holyoke College: The Marian Landreth Scholarship Fund, c/o Angeline Shenje Peyton, Individual Gift Officer, Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Ma 01075. Phone: 413-538-2761.
