James Edward Rickman passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2013 after a brief illness at Eden Medical Center, Castro Valley. He touched many lives with his caring nature and wonderful sense of humor and philosophies on life.
James was born in Battle Creek, MI. Predeceased by his parents James E. and Anna Mae Rickman, and his son Jon Rickman. He came to Oakland, CA in the early 1960's, where he attended St. Elizabeth High School. James attended University of California in Berkeley, and studied drafting and civil engineering. James had several trades over his lifetime, but one career that brought him pride and joy was Security & Parking Enforcement Officer for Peralta Jr. College, Laney, as well as Duplicating/Video/ Media Technician for Laney Campus. James was a strong believer in social justice and for workers rights, and was a union member SEIU Local 790, and served as Chapter President. James enjoyed photography, drawing, wood working, messing with his computers and laptops, and watching his favorite science fiction and detective shows. James also loved music, especially jazz and classical guitar.
James is survived by his loving wife, Carmelita, devoted children Jacques (Tony) of San Leandro, Jacqueline (Jacqui) of Oakland, grandson Dallas Rickman-Gundersen of Oakland and son-in-law Gary Horsman. His generous spirit and wisdom will be missed by all that knew him.
Relatives and Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 9:00 am-10:00 am at St. Leander's Catholic Church, 550 W. Estudillo Ave, 94577, (510) 895-5631. A Celebration of James E. Rickman's Life Brunch to follow the mass.
