Barbara E. Dittmann M.D. , 94, of Berkeley California died peacefully at her home on April 10th. Dr. Dittmann was a long time resident of Berkeley, arriving in 1948. She practiced pediatric medicine in private practice, and later joined Kaiser Pemanente in Oakland. She also worked for the Alameda County health department as the public health officer where she made many lifelong friends.
She graduated from the University of Michigan and completed medical school at Columbia University in New York City in 1944, and subsequently a residency in pediatrics at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. Later she received her Master's in Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley.
Dr. Dittmann was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and later moved with her parents to Tucson, Arizona where she grew up riding horses and discovered a love for the desert southwest landscape and peoples. She continued to make yearly visits to Arizona and the southwest for many years. In addition she enjoyed camping and hiking in the Sierra Nevada with friends. Her favorite places included Mt. Shasta and Fallen Leaf Lake near Lake Tahoe. She also enjoyed gardening and daily walks with her dog.
She was a strong supporter of many charitable organizations including the Alameda County Community Food Bank, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and UNICEF.
She is preceded in death by her brothers, George F. Dittmann III, and Alan J. Dittmann. Survivors include a nephew, George F. Dittmann of Las Vegas, Nevada, Barbara Bulter of El Dorado Arkansas, and Sharrill Dittmann of Rockville. Maryland.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alamada County Community Food Bank or Children's Hospital & Research Center Foundation, Oakland California.
