Bernie Brooks, age 80, left this world on April 9th, 2013. He died at his home in Sweet Home, Oregon, from recently diagnosed esophageal cancer.
Bernie was born on September 11, 1932 in Perth Amboy, NJ., Bernie's family moved to Berkeley, California in 1944, where he attended Saint Mary's High School.
Bernie married the love of his life, Colleen Mahoney, in 1955. Together, in the San Francisco Bay Area, they raised their five children: Tim, Ann, Patty, Joe and Kathleen.
Bernie became a
in 1963 and worked for the Alameda Fire Department for 15 years.
In 1978, their adventurous spirit brought Bernie and Colleen and their son Joe and daughter Kathleen to Sweet Home, Oregon, where they bought a farm and began a new chapter in their lives. Bernie worked on the Albany Fire Department until he was 65, making him the oldest active firefighter in Oregon's history. After retirement his focus was on his farm and family life. He was also active in his community, volunteering in local schools and for Evergreen Hospice.
Bernie was preceded in death by his sons Tim and Joe.
Bernie is survived by his wife of 58 years, Colleen, and daughters Ann Hess, Patty Dove, and Kathleen Brooks, as well as 15 grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Evergreen Hospice for their kind and competent support in his final days.
