Sterling was born to Donald and Mary Murchison of San Leandro, California. Both of his parents were originally from Scotland but met here in California. He was raised in a rich Scottish tradition, and spent his early years enjoying the frequent large family gatherings and listening to the sound of Scottish bagpipes played by his father. After serving in the military, Sterling became known for his culinary skills and worked as a cook and baker for several establishments in the Bay Area. He ended his career as a supervisor at the Gerber plant in Oakland in 1985. He loved spending time with his friends and family, working in the garden, and attending the horse races.
Sterling was preceded in death by his parents and his 4 brothers and 2 sisters. He is survived by 12 nieces and nephews and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews - all of whom will miss him dearly. He will be remembered for his kind heart, generous spirit, and jovial nature.
