David Wayne Peterson March 3, 1918 - April 18, 2013 Resident of Alameda David was born on a farm near Linn Grove, Iowa on March 3, 1918. He was the son of Carl Adolph Peterson and Bessie (Thomas) Peterson. He graduated from Highview High School in 1936, as Valedictorian of his class. He graduated from Buena Vista University in 1940 and taught Jr. High and High School in Alta, Iowa. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in January 1942 and served four years. He served most of his time with the headquarters of the Fourth Air Force in San Francisco. He met and married his wife, Virginia, in 1943, while in the service. He attended San Francisco University after his discharge and received his Master's Degree in 1950. He spent 36 years as a teacher and principal of four schools in Alameda. When he retired in 1979, the Mayor proclaimed a day in his honor and the community honored him with a banquet held at Jack London Square and attended by 350 community leaders, former students and friends. In 1989, he was honored by the Buena Vista University Alumni Association at Storm Lake, Iowa. He was awarded the Alumni Outstanding Service Award for professional achievement and service to the college and community. He belonged to many professional, community and service organizations. When he retired from the Alameda County School District, he was elected to the Alameda County Board of Education in 1984. He was re-elected twice and served 12 years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 50 years. He was Chairman of the Building Committee when they built the church. He served on the church Council for 15 years, and he dearly loved his church. He was a member of the Alameda Elks Lodge 1015 for 50 plus years. He also was a member of the Navy League of Alameda and Retired Teachers Association. In 2011 the City of Alameda joined the Alameda Unified School District in declaring June 5 David Peterson Day for his long-time service to the schools and the community. David is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Virginia; his daughter Linda (Gary) Woehl, granddaughter Elisabeth; his son Dennis (Yolanda) Peterson, granddaughter Marieka (Marshall) Greene, great-granddaughter Nora; and grandson Kyle. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Margaret, and brothers Eldon and Stuart. He loved children and dedicated his life to them. His association with the younger children brought him great satisfaction. If you can see the world through the eyes of a child, what a wonderful world it would be. A celebration of life will be held on May 7, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church 1323 Central Ave Alameda at 11am. David was also known as the Mayor of Thompson Ave where he lived for over 50 years.
