Winfield S. Smith
Resident of Berkeley
Passed away Saturday, August 31, 2013 in Berkeley, at 90 years of age. A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, and long-time resident of Berkeley. Survived by his daughter, Elizabeth S. Berg and her husband, Douglas of Castro Valley; son, Winfield S. Smith Jr. and his wife, Joann of Oakland; grandchildren, Victoria, Henry, Courtney, Anne, Celia, Julie, Sean, Matthew, Michelle, and Norma; and nine great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Hollett Smith in 2000. Winfield served in the US Navy for 24 years, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree at Annapolis, and commanded the USS Washoe County LST. He later worked briefly for the Atomic Energy Commission (now ERDA) in Oakland, and then had a career as the director of engineering for George M. Martin Co. in Emeryville; retired. Winfield was a volunteer for the Oakland chapter of the Red Cross; Berkeley Police Department, where he taught marksmanship; and Chabot Gun Club, Oakland, where he taught firearms safety.
Friends and acquaintances are cordially invited to attend memorial services Monday, September 16 at 5:00 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 911 Dowling Street, San Leandro. Private cremation, Sunset View Mortuary, El Cerrito. Interment of ashes will be held later at Mission Burial Park, San Antonio, Texas.
