Joseph J. Marino, Sr.
Resident of Hayward
Joseph "Joe" Marino, Sr., age 83, of Hayward, CA passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, on Saturday, January 25, 2014, after a long but courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Hayward, CA on March 16, 1930, to the late Angelo and Assunta (Zammarelli) Marino. He was the youngest of five children. He graduated from Hayward High School in 1948, and during that time, was very active in the Future Farmers and the 4H Club. After graduation, he joined the
where he served for 8 years being discharged holding the rank of Master Sergeant. In 1958, he married Rebecca Silva with whom he had three children.
Joe was very active in St. Bede Church, serving as an usher for Sunday mass and later as the Athletic Director of the CYO program for which he was very committed. He is well known as the person who ran the snack bar during the basketball games. Through his dedication, along with other volunteers, Joe gave the area kids a chance to participate in an organized sports program after school and on weekends. He believed that if you put a ball in the hands of a child, you will give him a way off of the street. Joe loved all the kids and they loved him. In his honor, the SAC-CYO 4th grade champion is given the Joe Marino Trophy.
He is survived by two sisters: Ann Jansen of Hayward and Florence Anderson of Wellington, NV.; three children: RoxAnna Forney (Randall), Joseph Marino, Jr. (Debra Birce) and Matt Marino (Becky). He is also survived by five grandchildren: Steven Gaspari, Jr., Jake, Nico, Erik, and Jessica Marino. Joe had many nieces and nephews as well as many, many friends. Joe will be deeply missed by all but never forgotten; he has touched so many lives in a positive way.
Family and friends are invited to the public viewing on Monday, February 3, 2014, at 5:00PM followed by a Vigil Service at 7:00PM, both at St. Bede Catholic Church, 26950 Patrick Ave, Hayward. Mass will be celebrated at 11:00AM the following day at St. Bede Catholic Church with burial to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the St. Bede's Boys Club, 26950 Patrick Ave., Hayward, CA 94544.
