Degretta A. Funk

Degretta Alberta (Spencer) Funk, 92, formerly of Hale, passed away on Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 at Masonville House Assisted Living Center, Coldwater.
Degretta Funk was born in Curtisville on May 14, 1921 to Albert and Lillian Spencer. She graduated from Hale High School when the school only had 10 grades. She went on to graduate as valedictorian at the Whittemore High School in 1939.
She won a one-year scholarship to Central Michigan University which was then called Central State Teacher's College. She taught school for 32 years at Marion, Standish, Twining and Hale. Her first year of teaching, at Marion, she was paid $150 per month, or $1350 for the nine months. She often remarked how grateful she was for that big paycheck.
Harold and Degretta married on Oct. 11, 1947 at Hale Baptist Church. Degretta canvassed the Hale area door-to-door in the 1980s for the American Cancer Society. Later, she and Harold volunteered for the Great American Lockup and Relay for Life, until they retired and spent their winters in Lakeland, Fla. They were very active in the Free Methodist Church, both locally and the national conferences. After Harold's death on April 29, 1997, she attended Hale Baptist Church in the summers, and winters at Light and Life Free Methodist Church in Florida.
She is survived by her only child, Wayland (Barb) Funk of Coldwater; grandsons, Travis Funk and Kenneth Labram; a great grandson, Brennan Labram; brother-in-law, Richard (Helen) Garver and several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Degretta accepted our Lord Jesus' gift of salvation when she was 12 years old. Her family is rejoicing that she is at home with her Lord, having joined her loved ones that passed on before. We are confident that this is not good-bye, but "till we meet again."
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10 at the Hale Chapel of Buresh Funeral Home, 121 S. Washington. The family will receive friends Thursday from noon until the time of service. Interment will be in Esmond-Evergreen Cemetery, Pastor Blaine Anderson officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Hale Baptist Church Scholarship Fund or Spring Arbor University Covenant Hills Camp – East Michigan Conference Free Methodist Church.
