Eugene Victor Skornicka of National City, formerly of Mt. Morris, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side at the Iosco County Medical Care Facility on Thursday, June 20, 2013, age 81.
He proudly served our country in the National Guard for nine years stationed primarily in Flint. Eugene worked as an underground construction supervisor and was self employed and owner of Northern Construction for seven years. He later worked for Bourdow Trucking Company where he retired in 1994.
Eugene enjoyed spending his time over the past several years running his booth at the Mio Flea Market. He also enjoyed his many trips to the casino. Eugene was a longtime member of the American Legion Post 211, a 54-year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324 and was an active member of Tawas City First Baptist Church.
Eugene married his best friend, Barbara Jean (Ovaitt), on Feb. 19, 1951 in Angola, Ind. Together, they celebrated 62 beautiful years of marriage.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Skornicka of National City; four sons, Victor and Bonnye Skornicka of National City, Robert and Landris Skornicka of Roanoke, Va., David and Janice Skornicka of Clio and Donald and Cheryl Skornicka of Clio; two daughters, Sherry and Randy Alexander of National City and Linda Roe of Tawas City; one brother, Albert and Pam Skornicka of Ypsilanti, 19 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Skornicka; one brother, John Skornicka; a son-in-law, Eaugene Roe; and an infant grandson.
Visitation is scheduled for Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City. A funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, June 25 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Rob Nordin officiating. Interment will take place in Wilber Township Cemetery with military honors.
